New Year’s Resolution

posted by smg

Not sure if you have noticed but I haven’t written in a while.

Let’s get the basics out of the way–one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to begin writing on my blog again, but that’s not really what I want to talk about here.  Instead I want to talk about why I stopped writing last semester.

I could give a list of excuses about being busy with coursework and teaching, and while that is true to the point, I never actually felt too busy to write.  To be honest I never lost my desire to write either.  It was strange, but every time I thought about writing I just didn’t have anything to say.  It was weird.  I was reading, taking classes, and teaching–the type of stuff that should spawn ideas and bring about blogs, but it just wasn’t.

C. S. Lewis said (somewhere or other) that Hell would be constant noise.  The type of incessant noise that refuses to let you think and refuses to give you a moment of peace.  That sounds a little like my contemporary world.  T.V. in the living room, radio in the car, cell phone always on, and a life constantly bathed in wireless internet.   Now while I have no plans to relocate to the 1840 or modern day West Virginia, I will say that in order to write I need to disconnect a little bit.  Due to my job this past summer I drove several hours a week.  Those long drives were great for thinking–and talking to myself–which later turned into writing.  Well I’m not driving hundreds of miles a week anymore, but here’s to hoping 2009 will provide me a new place to think, to disconnect, and… hopefully… to write.
