Ruth, Immigration, and Reflection

posted by smg

A former colleague of mine at FSU brought this article to my attention, and although I don’t agree with every point that it raises, I believe it is worth the reading.  Lately, I have been wondering about the ‘immigration issue’ that faces our nation today.  I don’t have the answer, nor do I pretend to.  Instead I have simply been asking myself some questions.  I know this issue is charged politically and economically, but the thing I never hear about regarding this issue from Christian adherents is: Where does our faith come in?  I know that certain positions may make sense politically or economically, but does our commitment to Christ and his teaching influence that decision?  Or, more simply, if our faith was our primary concern, how might our position change?

Again I’m not saying I have all the answer, but I have been asking that question.

Read the article, and tell me your thoughts if you are so inclined.

Article worth reading

posted by smg

Stanley Fish often presents articles that are worth reading even if you don’t buy the premise.  This one is highly enjoyable.  In it Fish reviews a recent work by Terry Eagleton entitled Reason, Faith, and Revolution.  In it Eagleton, a literary critic, examines religion, its place, and also gives some times to the claims of atheists such as Dawkins and Hitchens.  The article ends with a quote I enjoy:

“He is angry, I think, at having to expend so much mental and emotional energy refuting the shallow arguments of school-yard atheists like Hitchens and Dawkins. I know just how he feels.”

Personally, I have not made my way through Hitchens and Dawkins as of yet, (I have picked up pieces here and there in conversations, interviews, and articles), but their agressive, vehement atheism doesn’t seem to be the type of reasoned critique that will last.

Enough from me.  Read the article.

No Sex Please

posted by smg

So a Facebook friend of mine posted an article regarding the women in Kenya going on a strike from sex to try and prevent violence in their country.  Nicely done.  It will be nicer if it works, but time will tell. (Although I must admit I may like this idea more because it is happening in Africa and not here in Florida.)

Check out the article if you are so inclined.
